HATTIE ZHENG PHOTOGRAPHY
CHICAGO BASED DOCUMENTARY EDITORIAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
ABOUT ME
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago with a camera in hand and taking acting and singing lessons at a small performance arts school. My parents captured everything on camcorders and disposable Kodaks. I was captivated by performance and visual mediums, and loved pouring over family photographs and actor's studio portraits. Over time, I explored just about every corner of portrait photography before earning my master’s degree in 2021 and beginning my work as a mental health therapist. A year later, I stepped into weddings—and something clicked. Since then, I’ve built a life that blends both paths, splitting my time between running a private practice and wedding photography.

I live in Chicago with my husband, Yang, and our dog, Lumi. When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me at home—instant coffee in hand, enjoying Yang’s cooking, or unwinding with a good show. I also love traveling, wandering through small shops and cozy cafés, and exploring the city's food scene.

MY APPROACH

My style is documentary-editorial, meaning you get the best of both worlds - candid moments and posed portraits that feel artistic and polished. Much of the day I blend in and act as a quiet observer, so your gallery reflects the day as it happened. As documenter, I'm getting all the in between moments: you two walking together, friends laughing over cocktails, happy tears, and subtle moments you didn't even know happened. These are the moments that tell the real story—captured with intention and care, and meant to be returned to for years to come. Curiosity and spontaneity guide the way I photograph, allowing space for your day to unfold naturally while getting striking candids to be printed large and framed.
For portraits, I step into the role of gentle guide/creative director. Many couples don't realize that what is sold as "candid" involves subtle artistic direction. My couples appreciate guidance through simple movement and posing, delivering elevated portraits while being yourself.

As a 2024 bride, I understand both the joy and the complexity of planning a wedding—and how important it is to stay present within it. I’m here not just to photograph your day, but to know you as a couple and support you through the process. I want to know your story, what matters to you, and your vision for the day. It's an honor to tell your story, and I'm so grateful to be part of it.
